Ethylene Glycol Chiller Units


An ethylene glycol chiller unit is a low-temperature refrigeration system that uses an ethylene glycol-water solution as the circulating coolant to achieve sub-zero temperatures, ideal for industrial and process applications.

Why is Ethylene Glycol Added to Chiller Systems?

As is well known, water freezes once its temperature drops to 0°C or below. Ethylene glycol serves to prevent water from freezing, which is why such systems are referred to as ethylene glycol chillers.

An ethylene glycol chiller typically consists of three core components:

1. Refrigeration System: A standalone compressor-based refrigeration circuit, including components such as:

Compressor:

Darko glycol chillers utilize industry-leading scroll-type and screw-type compressors, delivering energy-efficient operation, low noise levels, and extended service life.

The compressor ensures sufficiently low pressure within the evaporator and maintains the refrigerant at ultra-low temperatures. It works by evacuating evaporated refrigerant while simultaneously compressing the low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant vapor into a high-temperature, high-pressure gas.

Condenser:

Darko Glycol Chiller designed with your choice of air-cooled or water-cooled condensers to suit diverse operational needs.

In the condenser, the high-temperature, high-pressure refrigerant condenses into a liquid by releasing heat to air or water that is at a lower temperature than the refrigerant itself.

Naturally, the temperature of the air or water in the chiller system must remain below the refrigerant’s temperature to ensure efficient heat dissipation.

Thermostatic expansion valve:

The thermostatic expansion valve plays a critical role in ethylene glycol chiller systems. It reduces the refrigerant pressure from condensing pressure to evaporating pressure, allowing liquid refrigerant from the condenser to flow into the liquid receiver.

At this stage, the refrigerant remains in a high-pressure, ambient-temperature liquid state. The expansion valve then lowers its boiling point, enabling the liquid to enter the evaporator, absorb heat, and vaporize.

Evaporator

After passing through the thermostatic expansion valve, the low-temperature, low-pressure liquid refrigerant exchanges heat in the evaporator. Upon absorbing heat, it transforms into saturated vapor or superheated vapor, which is then returned to the compressor to complete the refrigeration cycle.
