Pressurized Compression: Boosting compression across different pressure ranges
A turbocharger is essentially an air compressor that increases air intake by compressing air. It utilizes the inertial momentum of exhaust gases from the engine to drive a turbine in the turbine housing. This turbine then rotates a coaxial impeller, forcing pressurized air into the cylinders. As engine speed increases, both exhaust velocity and turbine rotation accelerate synchronously, allowing the impeller to compress more air into the cylinders. Increased air pressure and density enable higher engine output power at equivalent engine speeds.

Structural Principle
The fundamental structure of a turbocharger consists primarily of a pump wheel and turbine, along with other control components. The pump wheel and turbine are connected by a shaft (rotor assembly). Installed on the engine's exhaust side, the turbocharger operates under extreme temperatures (rotor speeds exceeding 100,000 RPM). Conventional needle or ball bearings cannot withstand these conditions, necessitating the use of full-floating bearings lubricated by engine oil, with additional coolant for temperature regulation.

Historically, turbocharger implementations varied significantly due to differences between gasoline and diesel engines. Unlike diesel engines that compress pure air, gasoline engines compress an air-fuel mixture. This requires addressing two critical issues:

  1. Thermal Management: Post-boost pressures elevate combustion temperatures/pressures, increasing knock susceptibility.

  2. Ignition Timing Control: Gasoline engines operate at higher RPMs with greater airflow variability, exacerbating turbocharger response lag. Additionally, their higher exhaust temperatures (compared to diesel engines) and limited valve overlap optimization complicate combustion efficiency.

To resolve these challenges, engineers have developed specialized turbocharging solutions for gasoline engines through extensive technical iterations.
